Chapter 12

Mercy

I wrinkle my nose and rub my chest as it burns. It’s been almost an hour since the guys left and this heartburn isn’t easing. If anything, it’s getting worse.

“You alright?” Xena asks, brow furrowed.

I clear my throat, attempting to swallow my discomfort, and nod. “Yeah. I’m alright. Just really bad heartburn.”

My mom smiles wistfully. “That’s one thing that I don’t miss about being pregnant. The heartburn was pure hell to deal with. Medications rarely worked and when they did, they didn’t work for long.”

Mom gets up and walks to the kitchen behind me. I hear the fridge open, liquid pouring into a glass then the fridge closing. Next thing I know, she’s setting a glass of milk in front of me.

“Try that, it always helped me.” I smile in gratitude at my mom as she walks around the table back to her seat.

As soon as I bring the glass to my mouth the guys pop into the dining room with Hunter holding Vivian. Mom, Xena, Farrah, and I immediately descend on them and demand to hold the loveable six-year-old.

“I’m so glad you’re okay, honey,” my mom cries into Vivian’s hair after tearing her from Hunter’s arms.

Farrah and Xena manage to convince mom to let her go so they can hug her too. They each murmur similar things to Vivian before handing her to me. I pick her up—kind of awkwardly given my protruding belly, but I manage—and hold her close to me, my tears finally bursting free.

“I’m so sorry,” I murmur into her hair as she holds me tightly, her own hand running down my hair as she tightens her grip on me.

“I’m glad you didn’t come,” Vivian whispers. “The bad man wanted you and the babies. I don’t want anything to happen to you guys.”

My tears fall harder as I squeeze Vivian tighter. “Silly girl,” I cry. “You’re important, too, you know?”

She nods against me but stays quiet and keeps holding onto me. “Is Fury okay?” she asks after a few minutes of both of us crying.

I pull back and wipe my cheeks, nodding. “Yeah, honey. He’s fine,” I assure her. “I think he’s sleeping in your bed right now.”

“Can I go see him?” she asks, her voice soft and unsure.

“Of course, you can, baby girl,” my mom says, smiling through her tears as she holds her hand out for Vivian to take. “Let’s go see the puppy, shall we?”

“That thing’s not a damn puppy,” my dad grumbles. “He’s a fucking menace.”

“He’s a hellhound,” Roderick says helpfully. “The fuck did you expect, brother?”

I roll my eyes at my family before turning back to Hunter. “That took a bit longer than I expected,” I admit.

He smirks. “Only because it was a different warehouse than the other one, so we had to do some surveillance first.”

I nod, understanding. “Anyone get hurt?”

They each shake their heads and I heave a breath of relief.

“You okay?” Talon asks, gently. Well, gently for him.

I nod. “Now that I know she’s okay, yeah.”

I rub hard at my chest again, wincing as I attempt to push the uncomfortable feeling of burning away.
